Stephen spent 14 years in the Merchant Navy, starting out as a Cadet Engineering Officer. During this time he acquired his heavy engineering and management skills, working with crews from China, West Indies and Britain. During his time, he rose to the rank of 2nd Engineer before taking voluntary redundancy to get married and move ashore.
Stephen then joined the NHS as an Estates Officer at University College Hospital London, where over the next 10 years he merged the maintenance departments of several central London hospitals under the North East Thames Regional Health Authority.
He also wrote and managed the introduction of ISO9001 for the estates department at UCLH, one of the first estates departments in the NHS to achieve this.
